Asprinio is a vitis silvestres-species, which has a long
history in Campania. It was most probably the etruscans
who planted the grape here. It was used for the production
of vinegar and has a high acid, combined with neutral taste
and low sugars. Some sparkling versions are made of the grape.
The producer Perazzo on Ischia used to make large quantities
of the grape under the name Pizzavino. Today Grotta
del Sole and Caputo are the better producers of varietal
asprinio.
