Tasting notes
The wine is made the year after Angelo Gaja fully took over the wine-making at the estate. The San Lorenzo is by many considered to
be the longest lived of Gajas three cru's. The bottle was purchased 4-5 years ago and was in very good condition. The wine was aired
for three hours in a Barolo-decanter before served in Riedel Vinum burgundy-stems.
The wine had a brick colour. Quite light with a brown rim and a red core. The nose was still quite fruity with cherries and showing
more and more tar and anise-sweetness with hints of old wood and a slight touch of roses. Good body and not at all to old. Perhaps
more fruity in the mouth and not that complex. Good acids and medium tannins in the back for a Barbaresco. I was surprised to find
this so young. It has kept really well as I was afraid it was too old now. The fruit was surprisingly still quite fruity. But I had
though the wine to be a bit more complex. Although a full-bodied and very good bottle of old nebbiolo there have been better bottles
from producers not nearly as famous as this one.
