Prunottos wines, Pre-Antinori, always strike me as being
wines with some quite equal characters; they show a bit
fatness in the mouth, a leathery complexity in the nose, high
acids and a little lower in tannins than the norm making the
wines elegant. Serralunga d'Alba is a commune which gives
strikingly pure and transparent Barolo with slim fruit and
tannic ends. So I was interested to see how a Prunotto
Barolo from Serralunga ended up tasting.
The wine had a deep brick/orange colour. Browning rim. Nice
leather nose, typical of Prunotto, with hints of anise, tar
and some dried roses. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied
and a highly structured one with lots of tannins in the back.
The fruit shows tar and anise and some leather. Good acids
and length. The fruit quite mature now. Not to be aged
longer. The finish dry and long.
This is a fine wine which cannot hide it's Serralunga
d'Alba-character, especially in the structure and the fruit.
The leatheriness is more typical of Prunotto. It's
definitely a very good wine, but I prefer the
Barbaresco riserva 1967 from Montestefano.
