A short tasting held in Oslo on August the 30th 2009.
Hochheimer Domdechaney riesling trocken Erstes gewächs 2008
Yellow colour. Ripe fruits in the nose. Honey, earhty depth. Some minerality. Fullbodied and again a quite ripe wine with medium acids. Decent quality.
Rauenthaler Baiken riesling erstes gewächs 2008
Finer nose. More underripe with hints of slate, flowers, minerality. Round wine in the mouth. Shows a little more residual sugar, but this is very crisp and elegant style. Fine fruit and depth. Young and flowery. Hints of minerality and slate. Fine acidity and good length. Clearly the best of these three EG-wines.
Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg riesling trocken erstes gewächs 2008
Flowery nose. Sweeter fruit than the Baiken. Simpler with a light touch of the minerality. Quite fullbodied riesling in the mouth with a round and kind structure. Nice flowery, but a little too simple fruit. Round and kind acids. A little disappointing.
Steinberger riesling kabinett 2002
Intense and complex nose. Mineral and lot of petrol. Lightly underripe leafiness. Very fine indeed. Round and medium sweet riesling in the mouth. Light and typical kabinett-style. Very fine fruit. Evolved and showing great now. Mineral, petrolly style. Decent acids. Very good kabinett.
Steinberger riesling spätlese 1998
Sulphury and almost reductive notes on the nose. Some minerality, but too much sulphure right now. Medium bodied spätlese. A little odd, mineral and slightly rustic wine. This does not show it's best right here. Some noticable sweetness. Fine acidity. Try again in 3-4 years.
Steinberger riesling auslese 1993
Yellow colour. The nose shows botrytis, honey, some marsipan. Fatter wine in the mouth with notes of botrytis and stearin. Again a little odd, but better than the spätlese. Great acidity and mouthfeel (10 g/L + acids). Long taste. Good. Try again in 5 years.
Steinberger riesling trockenbeerenauslese naturrein Cabinet 1959
243 Oechsle. 14 g/L acid. Copper/Cognac-coloured. The nose is complex with notes of botrytis, mushrooms, caramel and a peculiar and obvious note of beetroot. Some dried flowers. Rich and sweet wine in the mouth. Some fatness in the start of the taste-curve. The fruit shows loads of botrytis, citrus and again that beetroot-note. Very fine acidic structure. Long citrusy finish. Great wine, yet that note of beetroot is a bit peculiar and disturbs a little bit.
