The 7th Klitzekleine ring took place on September 24th 2011 in the old Batra-messpapierwerke on the Traben-side of Traben-Trarbach. Up for tasting was mostly the low quantity-vintage 2010. Beside the 11 members of the KKR and the Bergrettung-wines of the KKR, Immich-Batterieberg was present at the tasting as a guest. To the notes:
Weingut Richard Böcking
Riesling alte reben feinherb 2010
Few wines werw made in 2010 and at Böcking there was very little left. So they decided to show a vertical of the Ungsberg feinherb instead. That said there were no Ungsberg feinherb in 2010, but the juice went into this cuvee. Quite intense nose. Sweetish, flowery, appley. Fullbodied in the mouth. Acidic and dryish style. Flowery fruits. Some sweetness. Good length. Nice wine, not too deep.
Trarbacher Ungsberg Riesling spätlese feinherb 2009
This shows more the sulphure and reductive side right now. Some minerality and better depth than the ’10. Medium bodied ’09 in the mouth. Sweetish and off-dry style. The fruit shows a little more minerality and depth. Decent acids. Some more alcohol on the finish. Good.
Trarbacher Ungsberg Riesling kabinett feinherb 2008
A more undermature style. Complex, open and very drinkable now. Minerals, green apples. Medium bodied in the mouth. Lighter style. A little more residual sugar noticeable. Fine slim fruit. Mineral, evolved and complex. Very drinkable wine right now. Fine acids, refreshing finish. Very good wine.
Trarbacher Ungsberg Riesling spätlese feinherb 2007
More ripeness and sweetness on the nose. Honey, minerality, some botrytis? More power in the mouth. Again lightly sweetish fine style. But this is more closed. What is there is fine – mineral, lightly sweetish notes of honey. Fine acids. Again some more alcohol showing on the finish. Good, but I prefer the ’08 – at least now.
Trarbacher Ungsberg Riesling spätlese feinherb 2006
Quite shy on the nose. Some botrytis, citrus, minerality. Riper and more earthy style. Fullbodied in the mouth. The fullest of all. The fruit seems mature. Flat tasting in the mouth. Fruit not that nice. Seems like fruit is fading also. Medium acids and length. Modest quality.
Kirchengut Wolf / M.& U.Boor
Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling kabinett trocken 2010
Quite mineral nose. Slight sweet flowers. Light, crisp and acidic in the mouth. Mineral-driven fruit. Seems a bit hollow on the mid-palate. Fine acids, not that high for the vintage.Medium length. Modest quality. Something is missing here.
Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling spätlese trocken 2010
More ripeness on the nose. Yellow fruits. Some flower-sweetness. Some minerality. Fuller in the mouth. Somple flowery and lightly mineral fruit. Again there is a good acidic backbone, yet not that high for this vintage. Fair quality, but a bit simple.
Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling spätlese feinherb 2010
The nose is quite equal to the previous wine. A little more sweetness and flowers on the nose. Sweeter in the mouth. More flowery and fruity character. Some residual sugars. Quite slim wine with good acidic backbone, again a bit low for the vintage. Also this a bit hollow on the mid-palate. Fair quality.
Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling spätlese 2010
This shows more sweetness, fruit has more tropical notes. Some botrytis showing. Sweet ’10 riesling in the mouth. Sour-sweet style and a wine that has more of everything. Power, fruit, concentration and acidity. Good wine.
Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling auslese 2010
Even more botrytis here. Hints of honey, tropical fruits, minerality on the nose. Powerful and sweet in the mouth. Flowery, citrusy fruit. Noticable botrytis. Very fine botrytis. Young and refreshing style with high acids. Pretty, but rather simple. Good wine.
Weingut Johann Lenz
Pündericher Marienburg Riesling kabinett trocken 2010
Stoney nose with an artificial note of pear. Dry and hollow Riesling in the mouth. Very little fruit, medium acids for this vintage and a bitterish finish. Not good.
Pündericher Marienburg Riesling spätlese trocken 2010
A little more intensity on the nose. Some flowers and again that pear-note. Light botrytis. Again dry and bitter in the mouth. Slim style with a light flowery sweetness. Decent acidity, low for the vintage. Bitterish finish. Not good.
Enkricher Ellergrub Riesling kabinett halbtrocken 2010
Shy on the mouth. A touch of pear and some flowers. Light sweetness in the mouth. Again a light wine with little concentration. Some more sweetness in the fruit. Fine acidity. Again lightly bitterish on the finish. Modest quality.
Pündericher Marienburg Riesling spätlese 2010
Shy nose. Lightly earthy with flowery hints. A light spätlese in the mouth. Some sweetness. More fruit and concentration here. Citrus, flowers. Finer style and with a finer acidity. Higher and more refreshing style. But it is a rather hollow wine. Modest quality.
Weingut Melsheimer
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg Riesling sekt brut 2009
Bread, yeast and citrus on the nose. Medium mousse. Quite vinous riesling sekt in the mouth. Dry, slim and refreshing style. Citrusy and flowery fruit with hints of bread and yeast. Fine, if not too complicated. Fine acidity and citrusy length. Good sekt.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg riesling kabinett feinherb 2010
Mineral nose. Slate and some flower-notes. More powerful in the mouth than expected from the nose. Some residual sugars there. HInst of sweet flowers and slate in the fruit. Simple style. Fine acidity. Refreshing finish. Fair quality.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg "Molun 1143" riesling trocken 2010
From a very steep section of the Mullay-Hofberg. Flowery nose with some more minerality on the nose. Powerful and dry Riesling in the mouth. Fine minerality. Yet it seems more hollow on the mid-palate. Fine acidity, not that high. Lightly bitterness on the finish. Nice for the minerality, but not the best vintage of this wine. Good.
Gutsriesling feinherb 2010
More intense nose. Green flowers, sweetness. Peculiar style. It takes some seconds, before I notice it is oak. Fullbodied and quite sweet feinherb in the mouth with a refreshing acidity. Lots of flowery sweetness in the fruit. Quite creamy fruit-style for a gutsriesling again with noticeable oak-notes. Fine and high acids. Different style as this is aged in young wood. Not overdone, but different. According to Torsten Melsheimer this was done to replace some barrels and he wanted to get them older and more used. So he decided to put some of the quantity-cuvee in the barrels the first year. Good.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg Schäf riesling spätlese 2010
Flowery, mineral nose with some hints of botrytis. Good body. Fine and ripe fruits. Refreshing style with high acids. Citrusy style. Hints of flowers, minerality and fine botrytis. Loads of acidity here. Long citrusy taste. Year in year out my favorite here. This is a very good wine this year.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg riesling auslese 2010
More botrytis on the nose. Honey, light minerality. Rich style in the mouth. Eiswein-like. Yet it has a creaminess upfront in the mouth. Loads of botrytis, but clean and transparent. Very high acids. Too high? The fruit seems a little muted today. Yet the richness is there. Long citrusy finish. I give this the benefit of the doubt. Give it a couple of years. Very good wine.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg riesling beerenauslese 2010
Tropical nose. Slate and botrytis-notes. But again clear botrytis. Fruity BA. Very fine. Rich and fruity also in the mouth. Intense and acidic style. Concentrated, yet slim mouthfeel. Transparent, but fruity and simple today. Clear style. Long refreshing finish. Great wine.
Reiler Mullay-Hofberg riesling eiswein 2010
A whooping 23,3 g/L of acidity. More than 300 g/L residual sugars. Perhaps not imaginable, but this is even more acidic. Tropical and loads of citrus-notes on the nose. Concentrated, ripe and very refreshing in the mouth. Boy this acidity is teeth-breakingly high. This feel rather slim and half-dry even with this amoung of sugars. Cirtusy and lightly tropical fruit. Young and quite one-dimensional at this point. Long refreshing and citrusy finish. Long long taste. Very interesting wine. Mindblowing! This is the quintessencial 2010-wine. But is it great? The structure alone makes it worth tasting. It is a tough, one-dimensional eiswein today. Sometime in the future one might find out the quality of this.
Weingut Moog
Trabener Kräuterhaus Riesling kabinett trocken 2010
Earthy nose. Some minerality. Not the clearest style. Very dry and citrusy style in the mouth. Low concentration. High acids. Not much else here. Very modest quality.
Trarbacher Schlossberg riesling kabinett feinherb 2010
More sulphury nose. Hints of citrus. Some sweetness. Medium bodied in the mouth. More fruit here. Some flowery sweetness. Citrus. Touch greenish. Again very light in style and low concentration. Fine acids. Modest quality.
Trabener Gaispfad riesling spätlese 2010
Sulphure, slate and leafs on the nose. Sweeter in the mouth. High acids, refreshing style. Low concentration of fruit. Flowery, slatey hints. Simple style. Fair quality.
Trabener Gaispfad riesling spätlese 2009
Sweeter on the nose. More flowery hints, slightly greenish flowery hints. Sweetish and thicker wine in the mouth. Fatter. Still not much concentration. Lower acids. Simple and fair quality.
Weingut Martin Müllen
Trabener Würzgarten riesling spätlese trocken 2009
Spicey nose. Aromatically intense. Light evolvement. Dry in the mouth. Pretty fruit. But on the simple and aromatic side. Nicely evolved though. Nicely drinking now. Decent acidity and a dry finish. Good to drink now.
Kröver Paradies riesling spätlese** trocken 2010
Sour-sweet nose. Sweet flowers and citrus. Clear and fruity. Fullbodied in the mouth. Lots of concentration. Ripe fruits. High acids. Raw style. Almost 10 g/L acidity in a dry wine. Tight and a little hard finish. Nice and interesting fruit. Where will it go? Good.
Trarbacher Hühnerberg riesling spätlese** trocken 2009
Lots of flowers and herbs on the nose. Fine minerality. Powerful and slicker in the mouth after tasting the previous wine. But the acidity is fine. The fruit shows fine mienrality and not too ripe for this vintage. Still on the young side. Very good.
Kröver Letterlay riesling spätlese feinherb 2009
Flowery and slatey nose. Lightly sweetish. Quite sweet feinherb in the mouth. Flowery, but finely tuned and not too ripe character. But a lightweight in this company and a more easygoing wine than Hühnerberg, Paradies and Kirchlay. Simple and nice. Good.
Kröver Kirchlay riesling auslese 2010
Botrytis on the nose. But the fine and transparent kind. Honey, slate and lots of citrus-notes. Fullbodied and sweet wine in the mouth. Really high residual here. Yet the acidity is bitingly high. Citrusy, slatey and mineral fruit. Behind fine botrytis. This is hard to taste right now. Hard from the acids. Excellent structure and concentration. The future will tell what this will be. Potensially great.
Trarbacher Hühnerberg riesling beerenauslese 2010
Fruity BA on the nose. Tropical fruits. Apricot. Botrytis. Eiswein-like BA in the mouth with bitingly high acids and fruity taste. Clean and citrusy style. Slate and minerality showing. Great botrytis. Transparent and very fine. Highly integrated in the taste. Very high acids. Making the wine almost taste lightweight and drier than it is. Great wine with a great potensial.
Weingut O.
Trarbacher Ungsberg Bikiniblick Riesling trocken 2010
Fine nose. Quite ”natural” style with hints of the spontaneous fermentation. Complexity. Flowers, mienrality. Not too ripe fruit. Fine depth. Medium bodied, slim mouthfeel. Dry and mineral with fine fruit. Citrusy and flowery. Fine acidity. High, yet not that overpowering as it can be in this vintage. More behaved trocken from ’10. Good length. Very good trocken.
Trarbacher Ungsberg riesling kabinett feinherb 2010
The nose is a bit more shy here. More sweetness noticeable, yet mineral approach. Some flowers and citrus-notes. Slim feinherb in the mouth with light residual noticeable. Young and unevolved. Mineral and fine concentration. Pretty acidity. Refreshing and high. Everything is in its right place. But this needs a little time in bottle. Very good.
Trarbacher Ungsberg riesling spätlese 2009
Flowers, anise and minerality on the nose. Sweeter style. Sweetish and fuller spätlese in the mouth. Good concentration. Flowery, mineral. Complex. Still on the young side. Needs more time to open up. Fine acidity for this vintage. Some dry-extract on the finish. Great wine with a great potensial. Give it another 5-10 years.
Trarbacher Ungsberg riesling auslese 2010
More refreshing and sweet-sour nose. Eiswein-like feel of ripe fruity notes and citrusy notes. Some slate and hints of botrytis. Fine botrytis. Fullbodied and sweet wine in the mouth with lots of concentration. Loads of acidity. Flowery, citrusy and botrytised fruit. Young and tight with high acids and a refreshing finish. Needs time to open up. Long taste. Potensially great auslese.
Weingut Ingmar Püschel
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling trocken 2009
Flowery, stoney and slatey nose. Light sweetness on the nose. Dry in the mouth. Medium bodied . Lightly flowery Steffensberg with good depth and fine minerality. Perhaps a bit on the slim side. Typical dry Mosel-riesling. The alcohol showing a little on the finish. Good.
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling trocken 2010
Quite similar in style. The fruit is fresher and younger. More citrus and some apple-peel on the nose. Dry style in the mouth. The acidity is high, but not that hard. More tamed. Mineral style. Citrus-notes. Nice balance. Alcohol showing a bit less. Good wine.
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling auslese 2009
Some botrytis on the nose. Green flowers. Sweet in the mouth. Fine botrytis-notes. Transparent. Flowery fruit. Slate and minerality. Perhaps a little lightweight style, but fine depth. Interesting fruit. Very good.
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling auslese 2010
Prettier nose with more citrus-notes. Also a fine botrytis. Transparent style. More intense auslese in the mouth. Citrusy, flowery, slatey. Young, refreshing and lots of sweetness. This has style, concentration and structure. A step up in quality. Great wine.
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling beerenauslese 2009
A little shy on the nose. Hints of apricot and botrytis. A lightweight BA in the mouth. Sweet with fine enough fruit. Apricot and botrytis most prominent. Fair acidity and length. Nice enough, but light and simple in style. Good.
Kröver Steffensberg Riesling beerenauslese 2010
More citrusy and sweet tropical notes here. Lots of fruit. Apricot and fine botrytis-notes. Fuller in the mouth with higher Oechsle and more sweetness. More structure with a great acidity. Still a BA on the light side, But this has finer fruit. More depth. Fruity style. Fine botrytis. Refreshing finish. Very good BA. Püschel made a lot better wine in 2010 than ’09 in my opinion.
Weingut Staffelter Hof

Flowers and slate on the nose. Dry, crisp and acidic wine in the mouth. Quite light and simple fruited wine. Slight hollowness towards the finish. Light and with nice refreshing qualities.

Dhron Hofberger Riesling spätlese trocken 2010
Mineral. Different style here. More forest and earthy hints. To me a typical Hofberger. Slim, yet fullbodied in the mouth. Mineral and citrusy fruit. Fine acidity. Good wine. I like this style.
Kröver Steffensberg riesling auslese 2010

This is more open and old-fashioned in the making. Intense yellow fruits, more oxidative style. Complex. Flowers and minerality. Dryish with some residual sugars in the mouth. Fruity styled. Fine depth and minerality. Fine acidity for the vintage. Good length. Very good wine and a step up in quality.
Wolfer Goldgrube riesling kabinett 2010
More reductive style again. Hints of spontaneous fermentation. Flowers, light minerality. Sweet and citrusy fruit in the mouth. Lots of residual sugars, but held in check by the huge acidity. Refreshing wine. Perhaps a little simple, especially after the fine Schimbock. Still a very good wine.
Kröver Steffensberg riesling spätlese 2008
This is more open and mature. Complex mineral and undermature style. Flowery hints on the nose. Sweet and fullbodied spätlese in the mouth for this vintage. Refreshing style. Transparent fruit. Not the deepest wine, but a flowery fruit with fine mienrality underneath. Fine and refreshing acidity. Drinking well now. Great wine.
Wolfer Goldgrube riesling auslese 2010
Sweetish and fruity nose with lots of botrytis showing. Fine nose, complex and interesting. Intense and sour-sweet auslese in the mouth. Raisiny and botrytised fruit. Yet transparent anc clear style. Fine fruit and minerality. The very high acidity makes the mouthfeel taste slimmer than this wine is. Crisp finish. Long taste. Great wine with huge potensial.
Schimbock riesling auslese 2009
Botrytis, raisins on the nose. Hints of slate and spontaneous fermentation. Wilder style in the mouth. Complex, but rougher and more rustic style. Lots of spontaneous notes. Raisins, sweet flowers. Yellow fruits. Still very young. Sweet and fullbodied. Quite crisp acids. Fine for this vintage. Good length. Great wine, but I prefer the Goldgrube auslese from ’10.
Weingut Weiser-Künstler
Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling spätlese trocken 2010
Mineral and slatey nose with a light earthy touch. Dry and fruitier in the mouth than the nose. Lightly coarse style, but fine minerality. Good acidity, although not the highest for this vintage. Good.

Trabener Zeppwingert riesling 2010
A little shy on the nose. Light botrytis. Minerality, limey notes. Also some riper citrusy notes – towards tropical. A bigger wine in the mouth. Rich with some apparent botrytis. Still dryish style. Fine fruit. Mineral, limey and lightly tropical hints. Transparent and great depth. Crisp acids and a citrusy long finish. Great wine. My favorite from Immich-Batterieberg.
Escheburg riesling 2010
This is a blend of grapes from old vines in Batterieberg, Steffensberg and Ellergrub. The nose shows botrytis and more sweetness. Lots of flowers and honey. Fullbodied and more creamy style in the mouth. More residual sugars here. Tastes lie a sweet feinherb-style. Rounder style. Lots of botrytis and flowery sweetness. Some minerality, but does not show the depth of the two previous wines. But it is young and fruitier. Good acids and long citrusy finish. Might be the best wine in the future, but I think I prefer the Zeppwingert to this. This ended a very fine 2010-selection from Immich-Batterieberg.
Klitzekleine ring
Bergrettung riesling spätlese 2010
This shows some sulphure on the nose. Slate-ntoes and citrus. Some sweetness in the mouth. Still a slim and acidic style. Quite round. Mineral and citrusy notes. Fine acids and a citrusy finish. Quite open and drinkable now. Not too aggressive. Good wine.
Bergrettung riesling auslese 2007
Cool, mineral and still quite reductive riesling on the nose. Typical for this vintage. Some botrytis, but fine and transparent. Som thickness in the mouth. Apparent botrytis. Quite a lot actually, but it is very fine and transprarent. Mineral style. White fruits. Young, closed. Crisp and high acidity. Refreshing auslese. Great wine. Give it 5 more years.
Bergrettung riesling auslese 2006
Here comes the contrast. Riper more yellow fruits with lots of botrytis on the nose. The more earthier and honeyed type. Sweet and thick auslese in the mouth. Fatter mouthfeel. Honeyed fruit. Botrytis and earth. Fine botrytis for the vintage. Lower acids. Good length. Nice auslese from 2006, but very marked by the vintage. Very good.
