Tasting notes

Fine bottle with decent fill. Brown colour, a little
unclear and with some sediment. Greenish hue which
tells of old age. Fine and complex nose dried fruits,
orange-peel, flor, caramel, flowers and coffee. Medium
bodied in the mouth. Dry style. Fine complex fruit,
somewhere inbetween a manzanilla pasada and a
amontillado. Just a touch more aromatic with hints
of flowers, dried fruits and orange-peel. Remarkable
freshness in the finish with hints of flor, salt sea
and citrus. Good length. A great wine that was really
a surprise to me. Great for drinking now, but will
last longer.

On the back of this bottle is a poem that is written in a sardinian dialect named Sa Malvasia and it goes like this:

Color'e soli succ'e luna prena,
Accunnortu po is corus annugiaus
Sermentu santu forti che carena
E de buffai cun is ogus calaus

Allirghia chi si rocca su ranasci
Scarescimentu de dogna dolori
A corus turmentaus torra sa paxi
A is stogumus frirus su calori.

Gosu solenu, amiganza sigura
Chi boga de su coru su desigiu
Esti sfusta ma sciuta che bruvura
Ben'appa de s'ampudda su fastiggiu.

P. Cao

Not knowing the meaning of the poem I got help from Frank Deis on the translation. The translation to italian made by Professor Eduardo Blasco Ferrer came out like this:

Colore del sole e suco di luna piena
conforto per i cuori annoiati
sarmento santo forte come le ossa del corpo
da bere con gli occhi chiusi

allegria che ci tocca nell'alveo
dimenticanza di ogni dolore
ai cuori tormentati torna la pace
agli stomachi freddi il caldo.

godimento solenne, amicizia sicura
che leva dal cuore il desiderio
è umida ma nel contempo secca come la polvere da sparo
Riceva dalla bottiglia l'amore!

Another translation done by Paolo Cherchi came out like this:

Colore di sole, succo di luna piena
conforto per i cuori rannuvolati
vite santa, forte come un corpo
e da bere con gli occhi socchiusi

allegria che se ne tocca il midollo?
dimenticanza di ogni dolore
nei cuori tormentati ritorna la pace
negli stomaci freddi il calore

gaudio solenne, amicizia sicura
che togli dal cuore il desiderio
è bagnata ma asciutta come polvere (da sparo)
ben abbia l'amore della bottiglia.

The final translation to english was done by Dr.David Marsh:

Color of the sun and juice of the full moon,
Comfort for dissatisfied hearts,
Holy vine as strong as the body's bones,
To be drunk with one's eyes closed.

Merriment that reaches our guts,
Oblivion of every pain.
Peace returns to tortured hearts,
And warmth to cold stomachs.

Solemn pleasure, certain friendship,
That relieves the heart of desire.
It's moist but also dry as gunpowder -
From this bottle receive love!

I think there is no doubt that the producer behind this bottle of wine Cav. Demetrio Gaudina realised there was something special in this bottling. Unfortunately I can not find any information on this producer, which makes it probable that the producer is now extinct. That the wine in itself is made using flor also makes it historically interesting. Wines have been made using flor in nearby Oristano, making the well-known wine Vernaccia di Oristano, from the local vernaccia-grape. But there is no refereanse to any such excistence of flor in Cagliari where this producer was situated.
