This is Tonas top bottling (except the sforzato) and is confusingly "only" labelled as a Valtellina DOC (and no superiore). This is due
to Tonas use of pignola-grapes. The blend is 70% nebbiolo and 30% pignola (A superiore must be min. 95% nebbiolo). On the label Tona
writes that the Pignola gives the wine a more mineral character. Red colour, wide brown rim. Smell of wood, dust and minerals --> nuts
and roses (quite like wines from Novara-Vercelli). Medium bodied in the mouth. Slight hint of old wood. With some airing I pick up more
and more minerals. Good acidity. Not much tannins. Drying out a bit in the finish. Very mature. Drink up. Still quite good and
interesting.
