Notes from the 58th Weinversteigerung for Nahe and Ahr (with Pfalz and Rheinhessen) in Bad Kreuznach on the 27th of September in 2009.
The tasting showed that 2008 was a very nice vintage for especially Nahe, but also Pfalz and Rheinhessen. Definitely a far better vintage
than for Mosel. The highlights of the day for me where for dry wines Bassermann-Jordans Freundstück, for auslese-style Diel and
Schäfer-Fröhlich and above all the magnificent trockenbeerenauslese from Gutsverwaltung Niederhausen-Schlossböckelheim.
Ahr:
Spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, Weingut Nelles
Animal fur, oak and some autumn leaves on the nose. Medium bodied and quite evolved style in the mouth. Oaky feel. Lots of animal fur and oak. Fine fresh acids and some tannins biting in the finish. Oaky. Decent quality.
Devonschiefer “Reserve” spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, H.J.Kreuzberg
Darker fruits on the nose. Meaty and noticeable oak. Still quite slim in the mouth. Structured style. A little rustic. Earthier fruit. Dark berries. Fine frshness and acidity. Oak and tannins on the finish. Decent.
Melchior C spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, Weingut Deutzerhof
Again quite meaty style on the nose. But here is also a finer florality, red fruits and oak. Fresh wine in the mouth. Quite oaky, but cleaner and more interesting fruit. Red berries. Very fine floral notes. The finish is dry and hard with unnecessary woody tannins. Good.
J.J.Adenauer “R” spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, J.J.Adenauer
The nose shows oak, red berries, some florality. Medium bodied and fresh wine in the mouth. Fine and interesting fruit. Very young. Hints of red berries, florality. A little too much oak. Fine acids. Round and well-behaved tannins. One of the more elegant spätburgunders from Ahr this day. Good.
Mayschosser Mönchberg spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, Jean Stodden
The nose is ripe with dark berries and some floral notes. The oak is less apparent. Fruity and fresh acidity noticeable in the mouth. Young and quite clear fruit. Dark berried and some fine florality. The least noticeable oak of the day for these spätburgunders. Still quite a tight and hard finish. Very good.
Meyer-Näkel “SR” spätburgunder QbA trocken 2007, Weingut Meyer –Näkel
Closed on the nose. Some dark berries, meaty notes. Also oak. The most powerful in the mouth. Very fleshy and rich style. Rounder and not so fresh. The fruit is closed right now. Not in a good phase. Meaty, dark berries. The finish is oaky and hard. Tight. This needs time to open up. Good.
Pfalz/Rheinhessen:
“FR” spätburgunder trocken 2007, Weingut Keller
Light colour. Pretty nose. Lightly sweetish fruits and some oak. Light and quite grape-typical spätburgunder in the mouth with a light spicyness from the oak. Fine acids. Light tannins on the finish. Quite light styled. Good.
Westhofener Absterde Riesling trockenbeerenauslese goldkapsel 2007, Weingut Keller
Fruity, tropical on the nose. Sweet and intense. Powerful and sweet TBA in the mouth. Very tropical fruit. Clear and bright. Pretty fruit. But not the deeest and most interesting. Fine and matching acidity and long taste. Great wine. But was blown away by the TBA from Gutsverwaltung Niederhausen-Schlossböckelheim.
Nackenheimer Rothenberg Riesling auslese goldkapsel 1997, Gunderloch
Yellow colour. Evolved and complex nose. Very pretty. Lightly underripe flowery notes, some petrol, minerality. Sweet Riesling in the mouth. Very fine evolvement. Petrolly, mineral fruit. Underripe flowers. Crisp wine with fins acidic touch. Good length. This is drinking beautifully right now and is a very tempting glass. Great wine.
Morstein Riesling grosses gewächs 2008, Weingut Wittmann
Mineral, lightly earthy nose. Flowers. Medium bodied GG Riesling in the mouth. Lighter than normal, but elegant and fine minerality. Some flowers and a lightly earthy touch. Good acidity and length. Very good.
Freundstück Riesling Grosses gewächs 2008, Bassermann-Jordan
Sweetish flowers and minerality on the nose. Nice and round wine in the mouth with a touch of residual sugar. Good concentration and lots of fruit. Fine minerality. Good depth. Beautiful balance. Bright acids and good length. The best wine I have tasted from Bassermann-Jordan. Great.
Nahe:
Langenlonsheimer Rothenberg Riesling grosses gewächs 2008, Weingut Tesch
Mineral, stone on the nose. Some flowers. Round and kin Riesling in the mouth with a more pronounced floweryness. A little simple GG-style. Fine acidity and balance. Good length. Decent.
A.de.L Riesling 2008, Emrich-Schönleber
A quite reductive wine on the nose. Sulphure, mineral, stone. Slim and pure Riesling in the mouth. Crisp and fresh. Underripe, pure and mineral. Fine acidity and length. Very good wine.
Wallhäuser Felseneck Riesling kabinett 2008, Prinz zu Salm-Dalberg
A little leafy, underripe nose. Some minerality. Fresh and crisp Riesling in the mouth. Light sweetness. Fine mineral, stoney and underripe flowers in the fruit. Simpler style. Fresh acids, good length. Good.
Münsterer Pittersberg Riesling auslese 2008, Kruger-Rumpf
Pretty nose. Flowery, mineral. Some botrytis and liquorice-notes. Sweetish and fullbodied ’08 auslese in the mouth. Crisp and clear style. Tremendous acidic structure. Very refreshing and long taste. Tremendous wine.
Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling auslese goldkapsel 2008, Schlossgut Diel
Citrus and botrytis on the nose. Some flowers and slate. Sweet wine in the mouth. More botrytis noticeable. Honey and slate. Again tremendous acidic structure. Refreshing and long taste. Another tremendous auslese.
Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling auslese goldkapsel 2008, Schäfer-Fröhlich
More closed on the nose. Not giving much. Some botrytis-notes. Honey. Sweetish wine in the mouth. Honey, botrytis and minerality. But less intense and seems simpler. Needs perhaps only more time. Again a very pretty acidity. Good length. Refreshing taste. Great wine.
Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling trockenbeerenauslese goldkapsel 2007, Gutsverwaltung Niederhausen-Schlossböckelheim
Loads of botrytis on the nose. Honey, some caramel-notes. Lightly tropical elements. Also more interesting notes. Great depth. Very thick TBA in the mouth. Sweet and powerful. Great fruit. Tropical elements, lots of botrytis, but fine botrytis. Great depth. Huge acidic structure in the back. Citrusy, tropical notes in the finish. This is a historic great TBA.
Traiser Rotenfels Riesling eiswein 2008, Dr.Crusius
Fruity nose. Not completely tropical, but with notes of kiwi. Greenish notes. Thick eiswein in the mouth. Pretty fruit. Clear and fruity style. High acids. Refreshing and gives it a long and citrusy finish. Great eiswein.
Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling eiswein “Januar” 2008, Hermann Dönnhoff
“Typical Dönnhoff-nose” – precise, clear and pretty. Lightly tropical elements. Powerful and lightly thick eiswein. Not that fullbodied for an eiswein on this level. Beautiful clear fruit. Tropical, honeyed. Slate-notes. High acids and long taste. Great wine.
