Red wines from ’09 and whites from ’10 was presented for pre-tasting and auction. Here are our notes on the wines we tasted and the resulting prices they fetched in the auction.

Spätburgunder QbA trocken 2009, Weingut Nelles
Dark red colour. The nose shows new oak, dark berries. Ripe and oaky spätburgunder. Powerful and quite hard spätburgunder in the mouth. Dark fruit-notes. Ripe fruits. Lots of oak. This makes the wine very simplistic in style. Lacking any depth. Decent acids. Lightly hard and tannic end. Young. Fair quality. Auction-price: 63,72 € (0,75 L).

Devonschiefer “R” spätburgunder trocken 2009, Weingut H.J.Kreuzberg
Lighter on colour. Lighter fruits on the nose. Red berries. Some oak. Finer and a little depth here. Lighter spätburgunder in the mouth. Round and kind style. Sweetish fruit-character and also sweetness from the oak. But finer balance here. Fruitier style. More red berries and minerality. But again quite simple. Fine acids. Some tannins in the back. Good. Auction-price: 58,73 € (0,75 L).

Melchior C spätburgunder trocken 2009, Weingut Deutzerhof/Cossmann-Hehle
Dark red colour. Oak on the nose. Still fruitier than Nelles’ wine. Dark berries and a nice touch of florality. Tight and hard spätburgunder in the mouth. Oaky flavours. Dark berries. Some nice fruit behind there. Young now. Medium acids. Very hard and dry finish. Unnecessary and clumsy oak on the finish. Fair quality. Auction-price: 114,95 € (0,75 L).

Mayschosser Mönchberg spätburgunder QbA trocken 2009, Jean Stodden
Deep red colour. This shows a lot nicer on the nose. Animal-fur, florality, oak-notes. Red berries. Somewhat evolved on the nose. Elegant and finer spätburgunder in the mouth. Better balanced oak and more depth. Some dark berries, fine floral notes. Animal-fur and oak. Lightly toasty oak. Fine acids and some tannins in the back. Still young and apparent oak, but finer balanced wine. Very good. Auction-price: 137,45 € (0,75 L).

Walporzheimer Kräuterberg spätburgunder grosses gewächs 2009, J.J.Adenauer
Deep red colour. Lightly aromatic and spicey nose. Hints of oak, florality and dark berries. Fullbodied spätburgunder in the mouth. Round style. Dark fruits. And again quite noticeable aromatic spicey hints. Fine florality. Also apparent sweet oakyness. Fine acidity. Tannic end, but not that hard. Finer tannins here. Very good. Auction-price: 74,79 € (0,75 L).

Spätburgunder “SR” QbA trocken 2009, Weingut Meyer-Näkel
Deep red colour. Lots of high-notes on the nose. Florality, anise. Dark berries. Some oak, but fine balance here. Concentrated and rich spätburgunder in the mouth. Dark berried fruit, but with fien depth. Florality, anise. Minerality. Oak in the background here. Not too deep. Needs time to open up. Medium acidity. Fine tannins in the dry finish. Great spätburgunder and in a class of its own in this tasting. Auction-price: 152,44 € (0,75 L).

Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Bassermann-Jordan
Mineral nose. Hints of white fruits. Clear and pure. Not too ripe. Dry and mineral also in the mouth. Not too high acids, but hollow towards the end where the acidity should have been. Good quality. Auction-price: 94,96 € (1,5 L)/224,91 € (3 L).

Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling auslese 1951, Bassermann-Jordan
Not for tasting. Auction-price: 387,35 € (0,7 L).

Königsbacher Idig Riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Christmann
Sweetish nose. Ripe fruits, citrus-notes and fine minerality. Acidic and sour-sweet dry Riesling in the mouth. Higher acids and riper fruits here. Slim style, yet concentrated and lots of fruit. A little too ripe. High acids. Cleansing and drying finish. Citrusy. Good wine. Auction-price: 499,80 € (3 L).

Forster Kirchenstück riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Reichsrat von Buhl
Great nose. Minerality. Some ripe fruit-notes. Apples and lightly tropical hints. More elegant and acidic riesling in the mouth. Great minerality. More depth here. Apples, citrus and some tropical notes in the fruit. High acids. Cleansing and citrusy finish. Great wine. Again my favorite among the dry Rieslings. Auction-price: 387,35 € (3 L).

Westhofener Morstein riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Weingut Wittmann
Fruity on the nose. Ripe fruits. Some anise, some minerality. Some botrytis? Slightly on the rustic side. Dry and a little fatter in the mouth. Fruity style here also. Good concentration. Not as high acids. Rounder and more hollow in style. Good. Auction-price: 437,33 € (3 L).

Nackenheimer Rothenberg riesling auslese 1997, Gunderloch
Not for tasting. Auction-price: 131,20 € (1,5 L).

Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abts.E. riesling spätlese #17 2010, Keller
Fruity and clear nose. Tropical and citrusy elements. Acidic in the mouth. Paired with fruity, clear eiswein-like fruit. Tropical and ripe elements. Good dose of residual sugars. Paired with high acids. Very refreshing style. Very good wine, but does it have the required depth? Auction-price: 87,47 € (0,75 L)/ 212,42 € (1,5 L).

Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abts.E. riesling auslese goldkapsel #20 2010, Keller
This is also fruity on the nose, but shows more honeyed and botrytised character. Ripe tropical fruits and some minerality. Sweeter with more residual sugars in the mouth. But also even higher acids. Upfront it shows botrytis and some fat. Then honeyed and tropical clear fruit. Then the acids kicks in leaving a citrusy and refreshing finish. Long taste. Great wine. But how good will this be? Auction-price: 112,46 € (0,75 L).

Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abts.E. riesling trockenbeerenauslese 2010, Keller
Not tasted. Auction-price: 749,70 € (0,375 L).

Wallhäuser Felseneck riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Prinz Salm
Different style here. Not so ripe nose. More vegetal fruit. Leafy style. Fine mienrality and lots of citrus-notes. Crisp style in the mouth with noticable CO2. Again mineral and leafy fruit. Lots of citrus. Less ripe than many others. But the acids are strangely low for this vintage. And the wine tastes hollow and weird. Not a success. Auction-price: 237,41 € (3 L).

Laubenheimer Krone riesling grosses gewächs 2010, Weingut Tesch
Quite coarse style on the nose. Earthier fruit. Some flowers and minerality. Nicely bodied GG with a touch of fatness upfront. Fine flowery fruit. But simple style. Earthy elements. Decent acids and length. Very easy-going wine in this company. Auction-price: 23,74 € (0,75 L).

Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle riesling spätlese goldkapsel 2010, Dönnhoff
Typical Dönnhoff on the nose. Slate, pure white fruits. Snow. Some tropcal notes shows that this is ripe for this producer. Refreshing in the mouth. Fruity style on a very clear and precise style. Slim and acidic mothfeel despite substansial residual sugars. Lightly tropical fruits. Young. Citrusy towards the end with high and refreshing acidity. Great wine. Auction-price: 49,98 € (0,75 L)/193,67 € (1,5 L).

Münsterer Pittersberg riesling auslese goldkapsel 2010, Kruger-Rumpf
Flowery nose. Hints of slate. Greenish, leafy hints and some melon. Slim auslese goldkapsel in the mouth. Quite a lot of sweetness, but the acidity is even higher. Flowery fruit. Fine, but not showing much depth right now. Refreshing citrusy finish. Very good, but nothing more. Auction-price: 46,23 € (0,75 L).

Dorsheimer Goldloch riesling auslese goldkapsel 2010, Schlossgut Diel
Sweeter on the nose. Botrytis. Honey and tropical hints. Fullbodied in the mouth with lots of sweetness. Apparent botrytis and some fatness. Fine fruit with clear botrytis. Honey and tropical rich fruit. Great acidic structure. Leaving a refreshing finish with lots of citrusy notes. Good depth. This is a great wine from this vintage. Well made. Auction-price: 74,79 € (0,375 L) / 124,95 € (0,75 L) / 387,35 € (1,5 L) / 899,64 € (3 L).

Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube riesling auslese 2010, Gut Hermannsberg
Very sweet on the nose. Heavier fruits and more earthy elements. Honey-notes. Tropical fruits. Perfumed notes. Powerful auslese from '10. Lots of botrytis noticable. Fatness. A bit heavy style. Earthy, honeyed fruit. Not as clear style here. Some tropical fruits. Good acidity, but not very high for this vintage. Decent length. Very good. Auction-price: 88,71 € (0,375 L).

Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube riesling eiswein 2010, Dr.Crusius
Rich, sweet and fruity nose. Tropical and citrusy notes. Intense eiswein. Hints of apricot. Acidic in the mouth. Yet quite a lot of fatness upfront. Huge concentration. Botrytis? Mostly this seems fruity and pure. Loads of tropical notes. Citrus. Ripe and intense. On the simple side now. Young. Will it develop? High acids, but not frightingly high for an eiswein from 2010. Long refreshing taste. Great eiswein in the pure fruity style. Auction-price: 206,17 € (0,375 L).

Monzinger Halenberg riesling eiswein goldkapsel 2010, Emrich-Schönleber
Prettier and more interesting nose here. Citrus, tropical fruits. Botrytis, slate and minerality. Intense, concentrated and acidic eiswein in the mouth. Fruity and concentrated. Some botrytis. More minerality and slatey notes in the transparent fruit. Acidic and citrusy finish. Refreshing and long. Outstanding eiswein. Auction-price: 274,89 € (0,375 L) / 1149,54 € (1,5 L).

Bockenauer Felseneck riesling eiswein goldkapsel 2008, Schäfer-Fröhlich
A completely different animal. This eiswein shows some development. Much more complexity here. Yellow fruits. Tropical elements. Minerality. Killer nose. Thicker eiswein in the mouth. Huge concentration, espeially considering the vintage. Loads of fruit. Again a pure and clear style. Fruity, but with more minerality showing. Tropical fruits. Some development. Fine acidity. High, but better integrated in the wine than those two from 2010. Outstanding eiswein. The best wine of the tasting. Auction-price: 324,87 € (0,375 L) / 1324,47 € (1,5L).
