I never really liked the perfect. In a perfect world there would perhaps not be room for Müller-thurgau. The grape is deemed to have a bad reputation, being used for
so many years as a fast ripener and generator of sugar and large yields. Yet behind all these poor wines being made from this grape there is
the possibility to find good things. And many of the come from Franken. Lowering the yields and growing the grape on better suited
soil makes it possible to give nice results. Young, fresh, aromatic müller-thurgau is available from all over in Franken. But there are
even more serious wines from this grape to be found. And this '79 spätlese shows that they also have the ability to age gracefully. The
colour has turned golden. The nose is still grape-typically spicey and aromatically flowery. It also shows chalk from the soil and an
typical aged earthy character. It is quite intense in the mouth and in an off-dry style. A touch of fatness and a light touch of
sweetness. Still concentrated fruit. Lots of it. Fully evolved and lightly earthy. Spice, dried frlowers, chalk. Very nice. It has a good
acidity for this grape and the finish shows a light vegetal bitterness that disappears together with food, but is noticable without.
Good length. A clear and well aged Müller-thurgau that still has lots of life. Very fine wine.
