We started this day with an appointment at Daniel Vollenweider where we also should meet Peter Ruhrberg and metasapient. When we arrived some folks including Peter Liem and Ewald Moseler just had started a tasting sessions. We joined and when Peter Ruhrberg and Sasha again the spätlesen are the ones to look out for this year from Vollenweider. We also tasted some older wines including the spätlese 2001 and 2000. Both maturing very nicely. The 00 quite nice now.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese feinherb 2004 (AP: 02 05)
From the Portz-section. Slatey nose. Some tropical fruits. Medium sweet, lightly spritzy wine with good concentration. Very fine. 28 g/L rs.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling kabinett 2004 (AP: 01 05)
Only one kabinett this year. A sweet and full-bodied style. Slate and some tropical fruits again. High acids and refreshing taste. Fruity style. Nice.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese 2004 (AP: 04 05)
This blended spätlese was fermented using natural yeasts (only). This was more elegant and complex showing more slate and white fruits. One of my favorites.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese 2004 (AP: 05 05)
This bottling was added cultured yeasts. It’s a more fruity style. More evident sweetness and more structure. But lacking the complexity and elegance.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese Padauer 2004
More concentrated wine with more depth. Quite fruity with more minerals. The three bottlings with parcel-names are all very good this year with not much quality-difference beteween them. A lot of people found this their favourite including Caroline.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese Portz 2004
But I seemed to like this a tad better. Perhaps more towards auslese, but refined nose of slte and yellow fruits and very elegant in the mouth.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese Reiler 2004
A concentrated spätese from a site that showed very good in 02. Fine this year too, with a bit more earth in the fruit.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling spätlese GK 2004
A very nice GK with it’s added power and extract. Some honey and slightly fatness in the entrance. Very structured and long taste. A quality-step up.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling auslese 2004
Raisiny and quite botrytised nose. Not much giving right now. Powerful and with a little lower acids. Not Vollenweiders best auslese. Hope it will open up and show better another time.

Wolfer Goldgrube riesling TBA 2003
Harvested at 300 oechsle (!!), 5,8 % alcohol, 500 g/L rs. Yeah, it’s tremendously rich and thick syrup. But also with a nice and strangely focused fruit in it. Great structure and incredible long. Put it in the cellar and let it age for a 60-70 years.
